Hudson is home, and we hope he stays here from now on! He spent 18 days of the last month inpatient, and he is tired. This most recent stay was incredibly frustrating. We dealt with the most inept team of residents we've ever had, and they complicated everything with their inexperience. That's me trying to say it nicely! Our amazing Dr. K and the GI team set them straight and pulled together to figure out what was going on.
The good news is that I think they solved the mystery of Hudson's fevers, stool issues, and stomach pain. Finally! He has dealt with this for so long now. GI performed an endoscopy and colonoscopy, and aspirate from Hudson's small bowel was cultured. The culture grew out gram negative bugs, ones that are usually found further down in the intestines. So diagnosis number one is small bowel bacterial overgrowth. He was put on a course of Gentamicin for this. The second diagnosis is C Diff, another type of bacterial infection. His stool was cultured for this many times over the past month, and was always negative for this infection. This past week one culture was positive, and two were negative. We're not entirely sure what that means, but just to be safe the GI team put him on a course of oral Vancomycin. Hopefully Hudson will beat these infections soon and stay out of the hospital!
