Why I Love Hudson's Mito Dr.

We had an appointment with Dr. K today, Hudson's mito dr.  She came in and said she was very concerned about his heart, from a MITO standpoint, and not just from a heart standpoint.  She is worried about how the stress of his heart functioning poorly is affecting his other organs.  She told us she is going to speak to his cardiologist and figure out where everyone stands on the issue, and make sure they know where she stands on it.  Dr. K doesn't feel like Hudson will meet the weight requirement for the cath lab in a year, and honestly, neither do we.  He gains weight at a ridiculously slow rate.  She also specifically wants to find the answer to three questions... one, is the cath procedure being put off by the cardiologists in order to ensure a higher "success" rate for them, because the cath lab may not be the best equipped to deal with his particular issues...two, is there another hospital that would be a better fit cardiac wise for Hudson to have the closure done at, one that is better equipped to handle his type and size of defect...she mentioned Dallas as a possibility...and three, how much progress do they truly expect to see in terms of the rim strengthening around the ASD, and is an open heart procedure honestly what we're really looking at?

And that is why we love her. 

She answered all of our questions without me even having to say a word.  She's that good.  I love how she understands Hudson, and understands how this major organ could really be having a significant effect on the rest of his body.  Many doctors tend to see their specialty as a discrete unit, unconnected to the whole.  You see GI, they talk GI...you see cardiology...they talk about the heart.  Dr. K talks about the whole, and puts it all together, and truly looks out for our little guy. 

So after she discusses things with cardiology she's going to contact me with the decision.  Once again, more waiting.  But I'm so very glad she's on the case this time!

We did discuss his other issues going on, major fatigue...sleeping around 14 hrs. a day, GI troubles, respiratory...she thinks a majority of these issues could be worsening due to his heart, and would like to see how he does after the heart repair.  If Hudson still has these problems happening, then she'll look into treating or further testing.  We also saw nephrology, the kidney dr., and Hudson got an all clear on that front!

In other completely exciting news, Hudson said his very first word last week...outside...and now we are always going outside to reward him.  Followed by immediately coming inside because it's way too hot for him!  He has also begun signing please more consistently, and rock star that he is, also signed more for the very first time!  We are so blessed to see this surge in communication with him.  To hear his precious little voice saying a word is so emotional.  Dr. K was so proud of him, and when he babbled something incoherently to her, she quickly announced that he'd said his second word...Dr. K!  It is an amazing feeling to have a doctor love and care for your baby so much.  Please pray that Dr. K and the cardiologists can come to an agreement, and soon!
